Our private coach will depart from Saratoga Springs at 9am, and will make a quick pick up stop in Albany before continuing on to New York City! Upon arrival, check in to the Park Central Hotel, a recently renovated classic property with modern amenities and fantastic location on 7th Avenue and 56th Street, one block from Carnegie Hall and just minutes from Central Park, 5th Avenue Shopping, and Times Square. The afternoon is at leisure before we head downtown to Chelsea, to enjoy a private dinner at O Cabanon, an award winning French Bistro, where we will enjoy a specially prepared dinner with wine pairings. Following dinner, we will enjoy a RECITAL at The National Opera Center, featuring alumni of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program! After the recital, OPERA America hosts a reception us to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our alumni! MEAL INCLUDED: D

This morning, we start the day with a private guided tour of the Neue Gallerie, one of New York City’s finest museums. The museum will be featuring a very special exhibition during: “The Self-Portrait, from Schiele to Beckmann”, which will profile several renowned painters who were at the center of self-portraiture in modern art. The self-portrait established itself as a genre in visual arts at the beginning of the Renaissance, subsequently expanding its influence over the intervening centuries. It became, however, more prominent with the advent of the twentieth century, especially among Expressionists and in German-speaking countries. The selected works will show the circumstances and possibilities under which the self-portrait was created in the first half of the twentieth century.  Featured artists include Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka, Ludwig Meidner, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Felix Nussbaum, and Egon Schiele. Following our tour, you have time to explore the rest of the museum. This afternoon is at leisure. You may choose to enjoy lunch at Café Sabarsky or Café Fledermaus, take in a Broadway performance, shop on 5th Avenue, or visit another one of New York’s incredible museums. We reconvene this evening at our hotel, where our private coach will take us to The Metropolitan Opera for dinner on The Grand Tier, followed by a performance of the Met’s new production of LA TRAVIATA. Nicola Luisotti conducts Michael Mayer’s richly textured new production, featuring a dazzling 18th-century setting that changes with the seasons (pictured above). Soprano Anita Haartig plays the tragic heroine, Violetta, and tenor Stephen Costello sings the role of Alfredo, Violetta’s hapless lover. Plácido Domingo is Alfredo’s father, Germont, who destroys their love. Our private coach will return us to the hotel following the performance. MEAL INCLUDED: D

This morning is free for you to enjoy a leisurely brunch or explore the city. This afternoon, we walk across the street to enjoy a spectacular performance at Carnegie Hall. The English Concert conducted by Harry Bicket. performs Handel’s sparkling oratorio SEMELE a tale of a princess’s love affair with a god and her quest for immortality told in a stream of easy-flowing melodies and dazzling coloratura. Show-stopping arias include the title character’s florid “Endless pleasure, endless love” and touching “O sleep, why dost thou leave me,” and Jupiter’s “Where’er you walk”—a recital favorite to this day. Featuring Brenda Rae (Semele), Elizabeth DeShong (Juno/Ino), Soloman Howard (Cadmus/Somnus), Benjamin Hulett (Jupiter), Christopher Lowrey (Athamas), Ailish Tynan (Iris) and The Clarion Choir. Following the performance, we return to our hotel for departure by private coach back to Albany and Saratoga Springs. A prepared dinner will be served en route as we travel home.
