Jack and the Beanstalk
February 24 - April 3, 2020

Each year, Opera Saratoga tours an Opera-to-Go production to more than fifty public and private schools throughout the greater Capital and lower Adirondack regions of NY, western Massachusetts, and southern Vermont. The performances feature charismatic professional artists who love to share their joy of music and theater through the opera, as well as through question and answer sessions where students have the opportunity to meet the artists and learn about the music and what it takes to put on a performance.

In a world where the default forms of entertainment for children are primarily television, video games and the Internet, Opera Saratoga’s Opera-to-Go program provides youth with an all-too-rare opportunity to experience the visceral thrill of the live performing arts, up close and personal!

From February 24th through April 3rd, Opera Saratoga will present Jack & the Beanstalk. This 40-minute adaptation of the classic fairy tale features music from the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan,
adapted by John Davies.

Living in poverty with his mother, Jack sells the family cow to a mysterious man for a handful of beans. When he returns home and shows his mom the seeds, she throws them out a window in despair. The beans, of course, take root, and in the moonlight a magical stalk grows into the sky. Discovering the beanstalk and climbing it, Jack finds himself in the castle of a very large oaf and his kindly, haggard wife. Learning that this giant has taken his father’s golden hen, Jack, with the help of the Giant’s wife, stealthily takes it back. The Giant, in pursuit of Jack, receives a bump on the head after falling from the beanstalk, causing him to forget he’s supposed to be "bad." Realizing all the trouble he’s caused, the Giant resolves to behave well,
agreeing that consideration for others requires people large and small to treat other people
as they would want to be treated.

Through this adaptation of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, students will be exposed to operatic
music and classical singing, while exploring important themes of embracing difference and
the importance of working together.

Jack and the Beanstalk is appropriate for Pre-K to Grades 6 audiences.
