Opera Protest and Politics

OPERA, PROTEST AND POLITICS: AN EVENING WITH DAVID T. LITTLE

Monday, November 14th, 2016
The Fort Orange Club
110 Washington Avenue, Albany

In late 1935, the America composer Marc Blitzstein was playing a musical scene on the theme of prostitution for the legendary playwright Bertolt Brecht that he had written for the Composers’ Collective in New York City.  Brecht suggested to him, “Why don’t you expand this? In our society, prostitution can involve many more things than just our lily white bodies. There is prostitution for gain in so many walks of life: the artist, the preacher, the doctor, the lawyer, the newspaper editor. Why don’t you pit them against this scene of literal selling?” This suggestion led to Blitzstein’s revolutionary, politically-charged labor opera The Cradle Will Rock,  which was infamously shut down by the government prior to its originally planned opening night in 1937.

As Opera Saratoga prepares for a major new production of The Cradle Will Rock next summer, join Opera Saratoga’s Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson and David T. Little, the critically acclaimed composer of the politically charged operas Soldier Songs, Dog Days and JFK, for dinner and an exploration of the politics of protest through opera. David will speak about the Blitzstein’s inspiration for The Cradle Will Rock, and guest singers from Opera Saratoga will perform some of the music that inspired Blitzstein along with a sneak preview from the upcoming production.
